As the city began shutting down in late March, I heard a rumour that grocery stores might completely close as well. In a mild panic I headed to the local Metro. The store looked like Boxing Day with crowds and overflowing shopping carts, except everyone was eerily wearing rubber gloves and facemasks. Entire swaths of the store, like the cleaning products aisle, were completely empty. But you could easily spot people’s priorities, while every single pint of Häagen-Dazs ice cream had been snatched up, further down the aisle remained all the frozen peas you could ever need.
